Nate had spent the entire camp thus far kept up to himself. He hadn't found much time to get out of the cabin except for when it became time to teach his classes. Oh, the joy of being a counselor. But today was different, today Nate had found nothing to fill his time like he normally could and he was left searching for something that could fill the time that he so desperately needed to be filled. So he made his way quickly down to the practice room, on the way seeing only a few scattered people. Maybe it was because of some random jam going on, or maybe he had just gotten lucky and so no screaming girls would follow him. Whatever it was, Nate was not exactly muttering complaints under his breath so much as doing mini backflips in his mind. This was working out to his advantage.

When he burst through the doors to the smaller room he was overjoyed to see it empty and quickly made his way over to the grand piano that sat in the middle of the somewhat tiny room. As Nate sat on the bench his fingers instantly began to dance with an experts touch over the keys, and a beautiful sound began soaring from the piano, and filling the empty room with his melody. His eyes slowly closed as the pure joy of the music over took him. Something about the way that the song he had never played before knew its way from his fingers, was magical every time. He took a deep breath in and began to let the lyrics he had thought of last night flow from his lips.

"A sudden strength comes over me
And grants me courage to ask the question
"Are you content with letting go?
Or is it just me?"

'Cause I know that you felt the same
Remember how you used to call my name?
Well the love is lost, but not forgot
And I hope these words consume your thoughts:
I tried my best for you

Here we stand, face to face
And you want desperately to say
"You're tearing me down."
Well, we got caught up in an awkward kiss
Full of butterflies and hopeful bliss.
And now you swear there was never something there

But I could tell that you felt the same
Remember how you used to call my name?
Well the love is lost, but not forgot
And I hope these words consume your thoughts:
I tried my best for you

And I'll always be waiting; just tell me I'm wasting my time thinking of you
I'll always be waiting; just tell me I'm wasting my time dreaming of you
(I'm fighting for you)
I'll always be waiting; just tell me I'm wasting my time holding on to you
I'll always be waiting; just tell me I'm wasting my time walking after you
I'm running after you... "

The song wound its way to an end, and the music always knows when it's over. There was no way for Nate to drag this out any longer. So the final keys played out under his fingers, and then a content sigh escaped from his lips. Nate was not ready for reality to fill back in around him, to be in the cramped space once more, so without opening his eyes again, he rest his head on the keyboard.

laken cullens ,

and now i'm itching for the tall grass
and longing for the breeze
i need to step outside just to see if i can breathe

The only instrument to touch the finger tips of Laken Rose Cullens at camp was her guitar. She had spend a lot of her time figuring out chords, writing her own music, and strumming away. Her finger tips were rough from having to push down on the strings and sliding them up and down on the metal wire. Even some fingers on her strumming hand were getting rough because she neglected her pick at times.

Her slightly raw fingers longed to play the piano. They wanted to be dragged against the cool white keys and make music. They wanted to stretch to reach the far away notes. Laken needed to play the piano before she jumped into the lake from insanity.

She kept her eyes open for people she knew as she walked across the camp to the practice building. She waved and smiled to the people she knew. Laken was a friendly person, so it was no surprise she was waving and smiling to more than a few people. It wasn't a super long walk to the the practice building but long enough for her to start rolling her sheet music up in her hands.

Music room one was her destination. She knew it was small and it had a piano. Laken didn't want to be rude either and take up the big room for those who needed it. One person would have to move for a band of four or five. She'd save herself the trouble.

She reached where she was headed, only the door was closed. Her brow pulled together, wondering why that was. Obviously someone was in there, but the room was soundproof. Almost.

Laken pressed her ear against the door and heard the quiet sound of the piano. Excited, she slowly turned to the handle of the door and pushed it open just a crack to let more sound out. The lyrics and music came floating out. And I hope these words consume your thoughts: I tried my best for you.

She knew that voice. It was the voice that sold millions of records with a face all across TV. It was Nate Gray. Laken fought back a gasp but her breath did catch in her throat. She was instantly starstruck, knowing a member of Connect Three was behind the door. She also knew that he was much nicer than Shane, making this slightly less horrible.

As he sang the last words and let the last notes ring out, Laken waited for something else. For a sound of his movement, for him to come her way, for another song to start. Nothing came. Her brow pulled together again as she waited a little longer.

Deciding nothing was going to happen, Laken inhaled deeply, letting that give her some courage to walk in and talk to Nate Gray. Pushing the door open the rest of the way, she looked to the piano. Acting surprised, she said, "Oh! I'm sorry, I thought you'd left."

She knew very well he was in there. Laken left herself room for a story though. She could say she heard him before and came to see if he was done yet, and didn't hear anything, so she came in. "Um, was that you a few minutes ago?" she asked, wanting to tell him she thought that song was amazing.

The moments passed like seconds as Nate sat with his head on the piano. It was too easy to forget where he was, to get caught up in the song and he sat with the almost desperate hope that somehow the song would go on. But alas, he was not so lucky as the deaphening silence surrounded him. Suddenly the door was creaking and Nate spun his head up and around to the door so fast it was almost impossible to know that it had been resting on the keyboard. The last thing he had been expecting was to be inturrupted. But, this was a camp after all. That's what he got for getting so lost in the song he forgot that in this place he was nowhere near alone.

Nate's eyes quickly scanned the girl in white as she spoke. He knew that she was offering some sort of excuse for walking in, but once again he made that tragic mistake he seemed to always be making of forgetting to listen to words as he tried to sum her up by appearence. That was something that he made a mental note to stop doing. Crap, another bad idea, he had to snap back to attention when he realized she was speaking again. If he didn't stop this, he would look like an idiot with nothing to say.

"...you a few minutes ago?" was all that Nate caught. Luckily he managed to keep enough of his wits about him to guess the first half of that sentence. "Uhhh..." he mumbled stupidly as he scraped his mind for the proper responce. He had gotten much, much too lost in that song. "Yeah. It was." He said after a moment. "It was just kind of a spur of the moment thing." Nate added in an attempt to defend the roughness of the whole thing.

It was a moment after giving his responce that he remembered he had been playing in a sound proof room. He reapraised the girl, trying to decide just who she really was. A nearly inaudible sigh escaped from his lips as he decided to forget about it. His song had been heard. Things like this happened.

Her brows moved closer to her hair line in surprise. Laken couldn't believe it was a spur of the moment kind of thing. For being so instant, it was played very well. Her spur of the moment things all sounded similar or it took her a few days to work everything out to make it sound that good. "Wow," came from her lips, the same surprised tone in her voice. "That was really good for spur of the moment."

She moved closer to the piano slowly, not wanting to scare him. The thought of her treating him like an animal popped into her head. She instantly thought it silly of her to move toward him with so much caution. He was just a person, after all. Just a famous person who had his face plastered to every thirteen year old girl's wall. Laken was almost positive there were a few girls who brought his posters to camp with them this summer.

"Why not play more stuff like that for your CDs then?" she asked, giving a few seconds pause between her previous sentence. "I mean, that was really good. It didn't have too much in common with the stuff on your last record and that's not such a bad thing."

Laken thought over what she said in a second and realized what she might be implying. "Um, not that I think your last record was bad. I mean, I bought it." She was digging herself in a hole the more she talked. That was, unfortunately, one of her bad habits. She talked too much, too fast, and didn't think a whole lot when she got nervous.

"Sorry," she ended with. She bit on her bottom lip, another habit of hers, and pulled her eyebrows together and up to show she really was sorry. Laken was sorry for possibly insulting him, for talking too much, and just plain interrupting him. If she could, she would have kicked herself in the butt a few times by now.

A blush rose up to Nate's face at her words. He knew that it really hadn't been the greatest thing in the world. And the perfectionist part of him was eating away at all the small details he had messed up on. The compliment really did go far for him. It was nice to be appreciated when it was just a song that he was feeling deeply about instead of the... well the different sound that the label had them aim for.

He noticed a moment later that the girl had gotten closer to the piano. Nate hadn't seen her move. Had the compliment really distracted him that much? He shook the thought from his head along with his over analyzation of the song he had just played. It really was time to keep his focus on the girl he was talking to at the moment. The rude rockstar was Shane, and Nate really did try to keep his manners about him.

What she said next caught Nate by surprise. Since when did people actually like music like that? It wasn't the same as the label tried to sell, she was right about that. A moment after her apology passed her lips, Nate found himself in an awkward silence. What should he even say to that? He found the blush rising up to stain his cheeks red again as he gaped for something to say. "I....uhhh...I....Well...." He stuttered, words tripping over his tounge. "You really liked it?" was all that he managed to get out. That was just the kind of music that no one had wanted to listen to when they had been trying to make it big years ago. He almost didn't believe it.

"Of course," she said, letting her mind be over taken by the music. It was easy once she had already made a huge fool of herself. Here she was, standing in front of Nate Gray, mumbling and rambling like an idiot. She really couldn't say anything else to make herself look much worse. Although, with Laken, it could be worse.

Taking a few steps forward again, this time wanting to get closer to the person she was talking to out of the pure passion she felt for music, she began talking again. "I mean, the emotion, the feeling, the meaning... it was all so real," she said, thinking, her brow pulling together again, her blue eyes turning to fire as she talked. "The notes, the chords... they had the right sound."

"And you managed to put words to music and make it work. It's so hard for me to do that," she said, flashing her sheet music that she still held in her hand. "I think it's wonderful because it's something I can't do." That was something Laken hadn't meant to say and didn't realize she had said it until it was out of her mouth and too late to take her back. She was a perfectionist... had she really just let out one of her flaws?

She sighed, letting her excitement and joy out with that breath. Laken didn't want to seem like too much of a freak. Again, her lip found her way between her teeth. She wanted to say apologize again. For what, she wasn't sure, but she felt like she should have. Biting her lip kept her from speaking.

Laken hadn't meant to let that all out. Once she really let her mind be taken over by music, it was kind of hard for her to stop her mouth from saying the words of how wonderful it was, the good points about. Sure, she could point out the bad things in Nate's piece, but she wouldn't. Music was too awesome to even focus on the bad. It was good no matter what.
